About The Book

Agent of Creative & Positive Change

One night changed everything. On April 12, 1980, a violent military coup in Liberia claimed the life of President William R. Tolbert Jr. and shattered the world of his daughter, Christine Augusta Tolbert-Norman. Suddenly thrust into fear, imprisonment, and exile, she faced losses that could have defined her life but did not.

Born in 1943 into a lineage shaped by leadership, sacrifice, and survival, Christine’s heritage bridges free Black American settlers and the Indigenous Vai people of Liberia, grounding her life in faith, cultural connection, and an unshakable sense of purpose.

Educated in Christian mission and Catholic schools and later at Cuttington University, Christine broke barriers in 1966 as one of the first African students at Northwestern University. Living in the United States during the height of the Civil Rights Movement deepened her commitment to justice, equity, and service.

Upon returning to Liberia, she devoted herself to nation-building by co-founding schools, launching Liberia’s first Liberian-owned educational supplies company, and serving in government, ultimately as Deputy Minister of Education.

Alongside her public service, she built a home rooted in love and responsibility, raising three sons with her husband and opening their doors to foster children, extending a legacy of care across generations.

After the coup and throughout Liberia’s civil war, Christine chose compassion over bitterness. She sheltered refugees, including individuals connected to her family’s suffering, and created educational opportunities for displaced youth. Even amid illness and years of exile, her commitment to service never wavered, culminating in her 2014 appointment as Mayor of Bentol City.

More than a political memoir, this is a story of faith, forgiveness, and resilience. It is the testament of a woman who endured history’s darkest chapters and answered them with grace, reminding us that even after the unthinkable, hope can be rebuilt and healing is possible.
